چکیده
T HE method for measuring cardiac output based on the "dye dilution" principle of Stewart and Hamilton" 2 involves the injection of a known amount of colored substance into a vein and collection of serial samples of blood from an artery for determination of the concentration of dye. Other substances have been used for injection, such as salt solution and radioactive cells.3' 4 The validity of this method of measurement of flow depends on the assumption that the dye is distributed throughout a "central" pool of blood as it passes from the vein into the right heart chambers, the lungs, the left heart and out into the arterial system of vessels. The validity and accuracy of the method for determining rates of flow in mechanical systems and the cardiac output in animals and human subjects have been determined by other workers.5 6 Our interest in the dye dilution curves has

متن کاملA mathematical model of dilution curves for flow study.
THE PURPOSE of this paper is to present a mathematical model of dilution curves obtained by precordial detection of concentration of an intravenously injected radioactive tracer. The analysis makes possible formulation of equations relating parameters of the curve to cofunctions of the curve, such as cardiac output, central circulating blood volume, and volume of heart chambers. The presentatio...
متن کاملIndicator-dilution curves in acyanotic congenital heart disease.
Dye dilution and cardiac catheterization technics were used to study 36 patients with a central left-to-right shunt due to patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect. The configuration of dilution curves following injection of dye into an antecubital vein was similar in all instances. Principal abnormalities of the curve were a prolongation of its disappearance ...
متن کاملAn improved method for the calibration of continuously recorded dye dilution curves.
ONE of the main problems in the use of continuously recorded dye dilution curves has been the calibration of the obtained curves. Methods involving measurements from the "tail" of the dilution curve are often inaccurate because in this portion of the curve the concentration of dye is low. Other methods of calibration involve determinations from a sample of blood withdrawn before or after the di...
متن کاملA photoelectric ear densitometer for continuously recording the arterial concentration of T-1824 in the dye-dilution method.
To eliminate the collection of serial samples of arterial blood an instrument has been developed which records dye-dilution curves by measuring changes in optical density of a segment of a heatflushed ear. Comparison with curves from arterial samples shows close similarity in the shape of the curves, and good agreement between the cardiac outputs calculated from them. Other advantages of the te...
